Exploring British Values
Respect, democracy, freedom of speech?
This presents both opportunities and challenges. DEED’s training aims to help all schools develop a whole school approach to British values, whether reflecting on your school ethos, developing a new policy, enriching your curriculum, creating school displays or improving pupil voice. We aim to avoid narrow definitions and raise the profile of values education in your school to help children and young people make sense of the world, improve how they interact with others and develop into a responsible more rounded individual.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
• Examine different ideas underpinning values and explore these within the context of their school and the wider world, linking to their whole school ethos and spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.
• Share resources, ideas, lesson plans, websites and policies to deepen their understanding of British values and develop a whole school framework for learning about them.
“All maintained schools must meet the requirements set out in section 78 of the Education Act 2002 and promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils. Through ensuring pupils’ SMSC development, schools can also demonstrate they are actively promoting fundamental British values.”
