Happy Summer

As the swifts screech in the sunshine over head it finally feels like summer may be here! Read on for a round up of all our latest projects. Wishing you all a wonderful end to the Term.

Drain Art

We’re delighted to share these new Drain Art designs created by Amelia and Christina from Heatherlands Primary School and Noah from Mudeford Junior School.

We worked with four local schools to deliver workshops to raise awareness about our interconnection with the ocean and what happens when we drop litter on the streets, which can get washed down the drain, into the rivers and out to sea. Ocean plastic pollution is one of many environmental problems we are facing, and small actions like Drain Art really help our young people to be part of a more positive future.

The Year 5 pupils came up with the winning designs of ‘Save Our Seas’ and ‘Only Rain Down the Drain’ and we hope you’ll agree that Mirek from LukanArt has done an amazing job creating these eye-catching and powerful images for all to see!

Where We Can Call Home

This project has successfully gathered the life stories of more than 70 people from local diverse communities who have made Bournemouth Christchurch & Poole (BCP) their home. 

We are now running our schools programme with workshops led by some of the people we interviewed who are talking about their lives and sharing their knowledge, skills and talents with pupils in classrooms across BCP. Poonam Paranjpe has already visited Year 3 at Mudeford Junior and will be travelling to Courthill Infants and Heatherlands Primary very soon.  Noah Messomo will also be visiting Upton Infants and Stanley Green Infants. 

We still have workshops available with Anastasia Pikalova and Larisa Sotnikova from Dorset Ukrainian Community for BCP schools only.

A limited number of free workshops are available for BCP schools only because they are being funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. If any Dorset schools are interested, please contact Louise who can put you in contact with our workshop leaders directly to discuss your needs.

Sisterhood of Stories

Due to the huge success of the performance by the women of Dorset Ukrainian Community at the Poole Lighthouse last year, we have secured funding to tour their inspirational and thought-provoking show. 

We are currently looking for a host school within BCP who could provide us with a venue this Autumn, and invite their staff, students and families to come along and learn more about how the war in Ukraine has affected the lives of so many women who now find themselves living in Dorset.

This year marks 30 years of the FAIRTRADE mark

To celebrate, DEED, Fair Ground (Wimborne’s Fairtrade shop) and the Wimborne Minster & Colehill Fairtrade Community are offering a limited number of schools local to Wimborne and Colehill a FREE Fairtrade Stall during Fairtrade Fortnight (9th - 22nd September 2024). Find out more here.

We can also offer support to help you with your Climate Action Plans

A key initiative of DfE’s sustainability and climate change strategy for education is ‘sustainability leadership and climate action plans’. The strategy states: “By 2025, all education settings will have nominated a sustainability lead and put in place a climate action plan”. This includes early years settings, schools, multi-academy trusts, colleges, and universities.

Sustainability leadership could be a group of people or an individual responsible for the development and implementation of a climate action plan. A climate action plan is a detailed plan to enable your education setting, or trust, to progress or commence sustainability initiatives.’
