Calling young POC based in Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall

Somin, a 23 year old mixed-heritage English-Indian sound artist was born and grew up in Exeter, Devon. She is currently looking for 10 young POC to interview and 5 ‘non-western’ traditional instrumentalists based in Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall for her project Sonic Landscapes of Colour.

The BLM protest in 2020 demonstrated to Somin that there were many more young people of colour living locally to her than she realised and that they, like her, felt their voices and experiences were not being heard.

This project will create a 60-minute sound art resource by interviewing 10 young POC, providing a safe space where they can talk about their lived experiences. Topics such as identity, culture, community, belonging, alienation, intersectionality, interconnection and racism will be explored. Participants will also inquire into whether their local natural environment is a space of resource and resilience.

These interviews will then be combined to create the 60 minute piece underscored with a soundscape built out of recording sessions with the 5 ‘non western’ traditional instrumentalists. Musicians will be asked to creatively respond to various stimuli including: interviews, stories, emotional states and images.

It will be carried on BBC and other local radio stations along with mini-sodies which will be used as anti-racism resources in education.

All participants will be paid for their time.

If you are interested you’ll need to fill out an expression of interest form, the closing date is the 24th November.
