Poole’s Hidden Histories – Free Online Inset
Calling all History Teachers in primary and secondary schools across BCP and Dorset!
Thursday 25th September 2025, 4-5 pm
Over the past year, DEED has been collaborating with Simon Powell and Louisa Adjoa Parker to uncover Poole’s diverse and often untold histories. It’s been a fascinating journey from connections to Indigenous peoples in Newfoundland, Indian soldiers in the First World War, African heritage heiresses in Poole, and an African Caribbean servant who became a key witness in a landmark court case at Upton House. Through this work, we’ve deepened our understanding of how Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, and wider Dorset are connected to global histories and events. Now, we would like to share these histories with you. We’ve created free, curriculum-friendly learning resources that you can use during Black History Month and that complement your history topics, such as Georgian & Victorian Britain, the First World War, the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans, and Local History Studies.
Join us for a free teacher training session where we will:
Introduce new, free teaching and learning resources for you to take away
Explore ways to embed diverse histories into your teaching
Provide practical support for planning inspiring lessons.
